The College of Engineering and Computing presented its fall 2023 awards during a ceremony at the Havener Center on Dec. 6. In addition, Dr. David Borrok, CEC dean, recognized new faculty and staff members. Dr. Francisca Oboh-Ikuenobe, the college’s associate dean for academic affairs, recognized Dean’s Educator and Dean’s Scholar awardees.
The Dean’s Educator Award highlights teaching excellence. Dr. Yun Seong Song, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering received the Dean’s Educator Award for his exceptional teaching and his pivotal role in reviving the Mechatronics course in the MAE department. Mechatronics and embedded systems are two of the most in-demand areas for our students, so this revival has long-term implications for the growth of the overall program. Additionally, Dr. Song was a co-PI on a successful grant to stimulate doctoral student development in the field of mechatronics.
Dr. Medhi Ferdowsi, associate dean for research, recognized researchers who have received patents in the past year. Dr. Jonghyun Park, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, was recognized for his innovative patents in cell for flow battery and fuel cell having corrugated membrane electrode assembly. His groundbreaking work is paving the way for more efficient and sustainable energy storage solutions and enhancing the efficiency, durability, and scalability of flow batteries, making renewable energy sources more viable and accessible.
Acknowledgment of outstanding staff performance was also part of the ceremony. From the MAE department, Deborah Willy was honored with the Peer-to-Peer Award, and Skylar Rea was recognized with the Student Service Award, both commendable for their exceptional service.
